Here is a bizarre horror trilogy revolving around the yokai monster legends of Japan. This partially shot-on-video horror trilogy features a strange intro where a spaceship lands and travels what appears to be the moon. Two cosmonauts (they sound as though they are speaking Russian) walk the surface of the moon and while exploring, one uncovers a samurai sword buried amongst the moon dust. The cosmonaut picks up the sword, and the glare and glint of the blade reflects a strange Japanese woman with red pupils... and then through the magic of poorly generated video effects... we see a skull and skeletal remains in front of an ancient Japanese castle which then dissolves into a scene in ancient Japan where a young woman is facing down the point of a sword by an elder samurai man. He is talked out of killing the woman by spinning 3 tales of horror and fantasy. (SOME SPOILERS AHEAD!!) The first story is entitled KAPPA and is an eerie tale of adultery and revenge from the dead... featuring the famous strange river creature legend in Japan. The Kappa creature is fairly creepy-looking. The second tale is called ODEN JINJA which is in black and white and is made to look like an early silent film with only a music score and a scratchy distressed film look. This very short (and somewhat comedic) segment is the most surreal of the three stories and has ninjas attacking a woman, a vagabond trying to steal some oden (a stew of sorts) from a shrine. Just plain weird and funny at the same time. The final segment is HERA HERA where two criminal-minded goons try and steal from a blind elderly man's mask-making business. They break into his home and attack and kill his daughter. The blind elderly man, not being home at the time and walking home, runs into a strange creature hidden under a blanket. The little fella is being harassed by a bunch of children with sticks. The old man shoos the kids away and takes the little guy with him. But, when arriving home, he can sense something is wrong. But we soon find out that the old man's new little friend is some sort of yokai and is pretending to be his daughter. The goons eventually return to the scene of the crime and through shadows cast through a window... see what appears to be the daughter alive and well and taking care of the old man. Things turn strange from here... and it's no laughing matter. (You'll get this joke once you watch the film). At this point, the film cuts back to the older samurai and the young woman. Tiring of her stories, he chops her head clean off... and things go wacky from there. Tons of yokai monsters come out of nowhere. Then, we cut back to the cosmonauts, where the possessed space man walks over to his partner and cuts through the air pipe of his buddy's space suit, killing him. And then there's even a bit more in this Z-Grade Japanese horror oddity.
