This inspired film was Japan's first color, full-length animated feature, and served as an early inspiration for a young HAYAO MIYAZAKI. Based on a romantic Chinese fairy tale, this Japanese animated adventure follows the love affair between a boy named Xu Xiang and a magical snake goddess spirit Bai Niang, who turns herself into a pretty girl. When disaster strikes and the boy is killed by an evil wizard, the goddess desperately tries to bring him back. Unfortunately, every attempt fails and she finds herself faced with a difficult decision. The artists behind this movie created excellent animal characters like Panda, Mimi and White pig. (These are obviously heavily influenced by Disney animal characterization). This Z-Grade anime rarity starts off with a short making-of documentary (also from '58) narrated by then Toei president, including a lengthy tour of the burgeoning Toei Animation studio.
