This is an Italian miniseries that has been cut down to 2 hours in length. The film is a wannabe LAWRENCE OF ARABIA mixed with a bit of spaghetti western flair. RUTGER HAUER plays Tom Burton, a former CIA agent turned private mercenary of sorts, pitting opposite tribal sides against each other in an effort to rescue the son of Catherine Sanders (played by former supermodel CAROL ALT), who emotes often and looks damn good even though she couldn't act her way out of a paper bag. Add to the mix Red Murchinson (ELLIOTT GOULD) as Catherine's sneaky lawyer and OMAR SHARIF gets to reprise his role from LAWRENCE as a conservative Arab sheik. Perhaps in the 300m version, this Italian Z-Grade derivative comes a bit closer to the DAVID LEAN classic, but we doubt it. Still, it is filled with a ton of cool action sequences, nice location cinematography in the Sahara, and a ton of double crosses, betrayals, and muslims sporting AK-47s.
